Grasshopper shot down by P-51s Dec 1944
In the book Eyes of Artillery it says that Lt Hugh K. Stephenson (should read Stevenson) of the First Army Air Section was shot down in an L-4/5 liaison plane by four P-51s in the confusion that existed in the early days of the German advance in the Ardennes, December 1944.
I assume that the "friendly" shoot down also happened somewhere in the Ardennes region of Belgium. Who has more details or a more precise date? Should be around 16-20 Dec 1944. Regards, Leendert |

Capt (not Lt) Stevenson (1920-1999) is also mentioned in Ken Wakefield's book, but no reference here to a friendly fire incident. He was attached to HQ 1st Army, Spa, Belgium at time of German thrust into the Ardennes.
A picture of him on wwiimemorial.com. Regards, Leendert |
