Lost Do-24 last days of WWII News Story
 

Interesting Story Can anyone name the plane and unit? From the article it is identified as a Do-24 flying boat used for ASR work.

According to one article the plane was from Seenotrettungsstaffel 81 and the accident happened on March 5,1945

Luft. returns dated 11-3-45 show that on 5-3-45 Do24T 1151 of Seenot.81 crashed at Kamp? inf.Erdabwehr ( ground contact ?) Ff Obw. Ernst Schluss, B Fw.Ernst Schutt, Bf Ofw. Heinz Bexte, Bm Fw. Friedrich Traub all killed. No other indication of mission perhaps this has been looked up before and assumed to be the aircraft with the children on board,

Erdabwehr = ground defence, so probably AA or small arms fire.

From my limited experience on Luftwaffe loss reports, it seems to me that they will only list the crew losses, and not the passengers.

And in this case, I guess that the goal was to load as many children as possible, not to be sure to have all of them well registered on a boarding list, so I guess the full list (or even number) of victims will never be known.

So it is well people the Do 24 given by Brian was the one reported lost with the children.

Looking at the third article in Nordpol's second post I think it says flying to the West from the airfield at Kamp. I could not find a Kamp near the Polish border, but as the article says the crashed Do 24 was flying from Kamp and the GQM gives the same location it looks like this is the aircraft with the children on board.
The 4th article by the son of Ernst Schutt confirms this as the Do 24 with the children.

thanks for the additional and valuable details. In the thread at the LBB refering this incident a member states "Do 24 T-3, Werknummer 1151". So far it seems confirmable what brian posted to identify the a/c (thanks a lot, well done!). Another LBB member remarks that the Do 24 was hit by a russian tank-shell and posted a picture of a wreckage-piece that was salvaged from lake's bottom at the crash-site. He is sure about that because informations of a bomb desposal team are telling that a splinter stuck in that piece definetely is fragment of a Russian type tank-shell. All in all at this point - strange enough - it looks as if the Do 24 was shot down by a Soviet tank.
