Crew names

Hi all,

Can anyone make out the last names of this crew? I can read Uffz Paul, Uffz Heinrich & Uffz Hermann but that's all.

On the back of the picture there is a caption that reads "Gräber der Besatzung Uffz Volz" (Graves of the crew of Uffz Volz). At First I thought that this could be Uffz Paul Volz of 4./KG53, killed May 11th 1940 but the names of the crew doesn't seem to match

Thanks in advance,
Rudi.

Re: Crew names

Hi Rudi,

I´d read the names as Andreae, Wegstrasner(?) and Basien.

hein

Thanks Hein, very much appreciated.

Does anyone have any further info about this crew, like unit, date of crash etc...?

Thanks in advance,
Rudi.

Rudi/Matti:

Our Revised EoE Luft Loss DB entry:

"May 12, 1940: 4./KG53 Heinkel He111H. Believed damaged in attack by Curtiss H-75s of GC II/5, then engaged near Vouziers by S/Lt Boitelet, Sgt Tallent, and Sgt Delporte of GC I/5. Finally crashed and burned out at Thonnelle, near Avioth (France) , 7.35 a.m. HB Fw Manfred Siegle, BF Uffz Paul Andreae, BM Uffz Heinz Moosbrugger, and HS Uffz Hermann Schien all killed. FF Oberlt Karl Knorr baled out and captured unhurt – later released. Aircraft A1+GM 100% write-off."

This doesn't seem to have anything to do with the Uffz Paul Volz crew loss, although they are from the same Staffel. Either the writer of the caption is wrong or our DB entry is wrong. I strongly suspect it's the former. I note the difference is spelling: we have it as "Holz. I sure that Peter Cornwell will check this to confirm which is correct.

Here is what we have on the Volz/Holz crew:

"May 11, 1940: 4./KG53 Heinkel He111. Shot down by Sgt Morel, Capt Accart, and Lt Perina of GC I/5 during sortie over St-Menehould. Crashed and burned out north-west of Ferme de Maivaux at Ville-sur-Cousances, east of Clermont-en-Argonne (France), 3.40 p.m. FF Uffz Paul Holz (sic), HB Uffz Leonhard Bierfelder, BF Uffz Richard Lyschick, BM Uffz Max Dudzynski, and HS Gefr Ernst Stäudner all killed. Aircraft A1+BM 100% write-off.

Rudi, in addition to the grave cross, are there any photos of the wreckage of A1+GM with the photos that you've acquired of the graves? This is one we're trying to document.

Hi Larry,

"Volz" is the correct spelling! Lyschik and Dudzinski are also different spelled from your entry.

Re: Crew names

Thanks everyone for your inputs. Very much appreciated.

Matti: The caption on the back doesn't mention where this picture was taken, but I think Larry already answered this question.

Larry: I'm afraid no pictures of the aircraft itself. Only this one with the graves.

Regards,
Rudi.
