I am trying to ascertain who held the post of Stellv. Geschwaderkommodore Kampfgeschwader 40 on 29-July-1942, as per the signature on the attached scan from a citation for the award of a FFS.
Any help will be very gratefully received indeed. Regards Richard. |

A name has been thrown into the ring in answer to my question however, I would appreciate some further opinions as the orginator of this basically submitted it as a guess.
Major Roman Dawczynski Gruppenkommander IV.(Erg.)/KG40 at the time the document was signed. Are there any further opinions at all? Any help really will be very well received. Regards Richard. |
Re: Stellv. Geschwaderkommodore KG40 - 29-July-1942
Found on Google that "u.stellv." stand for "deputy".
So the highest-ranking GrKdeur doesn't seem a bad guess. |

Hello,
The name Major Roman Dawczynski cropping up is interesting, does anyone have details of his career, that is, without meaning to divert from the thread? Many thanks. Tony K |

ROMAN DAWCZYNSKI, little was known about this officer who was Kommandeur of IV./KG 40 1941-43.
The other Gruppenkommandeure at this time (29-7-42): I./KG 40 Maj Karl Henkelmann, II./KG 40 Maj Martin Kästner, III./KG 40 Maj Robert Kowalewski. The signature looks like : Dawczynski. |

I have a wartime signature of Kowalewski and the signature is definatly not him. The construction of the signature does not look like Martin Kästner at all. Which leaves Karl Henkelmann and Roman Dawczynski. In my opinion, I agree with you in that it does look more like that of Dawczynski however, I cannot be 100% sure. Can anyone else add anything to this matter? Regards Richard. |
