Crash of Lancaster NN 722 of 9th Sqn the 14.01.1945
 

Hi,
a friend of mine did some research about the crash of Lancaster NN 722 of 9th Sqn the 14.01.1945.
He is looking for a picture of Cook's Crew and a combat report of 9. Sqn for the 14.01.1945. Target: Leuna.

Info:
F/O Kenneth Alan Cook RAAF from North Ballarat, Victoria, Australia, was the pilot of Lancaster NN 722, WS-Z or WS-Q, 9. Sqn.
On 14. January 1945 Cook's Lanc crashed an a mountain (1000 m) in Bavaria near Czechoslovakia.
Six crew members are buried in Choloy War Cemetery, one in Berlin.

Lino,
NN722 crashed at Koetschen, 2 km S of Merseburg. WATT, McNEMAN, TAYLOR and three unknown were initially buried at Leuna.

thanks a lot for your info. I forwarded your information to the researcher. Specially the point initally buried in Leuna is very interesting. So maybe the Lancaster crashed near Lohberg, Cham county seems to be another Lancaster. Keep you informed, if there are new details.

Has the researcher got access to Cooks RAAF Casualty file on the Australian national archives?

He needs to pay too get this file digitised and it will tell him lots.

He needs to search by Cook's serial number 418227 and obtain the A705 Casualty file.

One thing it won't tell you, is the fact that the Wireless Operator/Air Gunner, AUS429719 F/Sgt Maurice James McNAMARA RAAF, was the younger brother of Air Vice-Marshal Frank Hubert McNAMARA VC RAAF, Air Officer, Commanding British Forces, Aden.
