Ju 88 of 3/KG 51, Godstone, 12 Aug 40

This has puzzled both Peter Cornwell and myself for a number of years. This ac, piloted by Uffz Karl Zimmermann, is reported (in the K Report) as crashing at Godstone near Portsmouth. Zimmermann reported baling out over the Solent and landing at Haslar. My deduction is this aircraft came down in the Solent but can anyone add more to this crash?

On my notes I have changed Godstone to Chilgrove, this was from another researcher and I no longer have his source so cannot confirm the accuracy of this.

Chilgrove sounds like the KG 54 crash the next day

I can't find a Godstone near Portsmouth? Is that correct? The only Godstone I can find is in Surrey.

In the Battle of Britain by Roy Conyers Nesbit, there is a photo captioned as being the aftermath of this incident. The caption reads roughly as: Ju88A-1 9K+CL 3./KG51 - flown by OberGefreiter Dickel, was shot down by fighters over Portsmouth on 12 August 1940 but crashed near Godstone, Surrey, where it broke up. Pilot killed other crew members missing.

The photo is from the authors collection but I'm sure I have seen it before in other publications. From the look of the wings and life boat compartment it's a Ju88A-5 also.

This is the photo in the book I mentioned. Is this a case of a mis-captioned photo? :)

I know Chris has the A.I.(k) Report for this loss but thought others might like to see the report in full.

Kind regards,

Melvin

So is the current view of this incident that it didn't actually crash at Godstone but in the Solent? Or did it crash on land at Chilgrove?
