F/O NICHOL & W/O BALL lost 7/12/43

Hi guys

47 Squadron ORB states that F/O Nichol and his navigator W/O Ball arrived on the Squadron on 6 December 1943, and failed to return from an operation on the next day, 7 December.

No initials, no forenames, no service numbers. I can't find them on CWGC so presumably POWs.

Any ideas?

Cheers
Brian

Sorry, typo in serial: should read LX898.

Hi Henk

Thanks for your responses to my queries (here and PM).

However, I believe their is some confusion re Aegean losses on 7 December 1943.

You have advised that 252 Squadron lost JL898 on this date, and now that 47 Squadron lost LX898. Is this correct?

Cheers
Brian

122549 Flying Officer Denis Nichol RAFVR (Pilot) and 523274 Warrant Officer Gerald Ball RAF (Navigator) were aboard Beaufighter Mk. X, Serial No. LX898, of No. 47 Squadron, Landing Ground Gambut III/Satellite No. 2, Libya, Middle East Command, which was recorded as missing from a shipping sweep north of Targeia Island at 17.25 hours on 7th December 1943. On 2nd March 1944 it was stated that a letter had been received from Flying Officer Nichol who was in a Prisoner of War Camp at Dulag Luft, Wetzlar. He was later liberated from Stalag Luft III, Sagan & Belaria (PoW No. 3381) and was reported to be safe in the UK on 7th May 1945. A telegram from the International Red Cross Commission, quoting German information, stated that Warrant Officer Ball had been captured as a PoW on 7th December 1943. He was liberated from Stalag Luft III (PoW No. 270002) and was safe in the UK on 30th April 1945.

Hi Chris

Excellent. Just what I was after. Why couldn't I find this information?

Cheers
