VIII Fighter Command tour of operations

Hi!
How many missions were required to complete a "tour of operations" under the VIII FC control?
Thanks.

It varied. In summer 1944, 250 hours for 30 day leave, 300 for CTD. My father had two 25 hour extensions between Late Sept and late November 1944 - came home, then back for second tour late Feb. 1945.

I'll have to dig but pre March 1944 IIRC the hours were different (less).

Peter,

Does it mean they were enlisted for the duration of the war and when sent back to the US used as instructors or in some staff office?

Re: VIII Fighter Command tour of operations

Those that completes a tour were liable to be re-assigned elsewhere.

Many returned to US to Training Command - some were transferred to non-combat jobs like say Operations at 8th AF HQ, or flight test at Wright Patterson. Some, after leave volunteered for another tour with either the same unit or another one, even another theatre.
