Loss of Kittyhawk IV FX740 of 112 Sqn RAF on 31 May 1944

On 31 May 1944 the Kittyhawk IV FX740 of 112 Sqn RAF was shot down near the Italian front line. It took off at 13:55hrs as part of 6 aircraft formation on an Armed Recce. Targets were attacked at grid G.5172. During these attacks it is believed that this aircraft was shot down by AA as it failed to return, and the pilot, Sgt George Fredrick Davis,1614505, RAFVR, was KIA. FX740 carried the cartoon character Wimpy forward on the cowling.

My question is: can someone tell me where the grid G.5172 was ?

Thanks in advance

You need to go here http://www.echodelta.net/mbs/eng-welcome.php

If you check the different maps of Europe that are offered it seems you need to enter G.5172 as rG.5172 and which has the following co-ordinates an area kind of SSE of Capistrello

Latitude : 41° 56' 59'' N
Longitude : 13° 24' 32'' E

Thanks Steve,

I did not know this website, it will be very useful for me.

I agree 100% about the position you give, it is very close to the frontline position on this day and so coherent with the description of the loss.

Best regards

Laurent
