Me 109 loss photo - 23 kills
1 Attachment(s)
I just came across this photo. Not my period or theatre. Is it a 'new' photo? And what is the story? Dated on reverse 21 April 1943 Egypt/Libya.

Re: Me 109 loss photo - 23 kills
Dear Andy,
this is the tail of Oblt. Heinz Altendorf's Bf 109 F-4, WerkNr. 7348, "white 1", in which he had to belly land after being hit by Flak near Mechili on December 16th, 1941. He had scored 24 claims, the first seven in the west, the remainder in Russia. Very nice photo and - at least to me - brand new. Many thanks for sharing it. Regards Jochen |

As an ardent admirer/follower of your works I would be very happy to let you have a highp-res image of this photograph if it would be of use to you? Thank you for the information! Andy |

That's a terrific photo! This to add a bit of personality; I assume it is the same gentleman.

Re: Me 109 loss photo - 23 kills
Dear Andy,
the answer to your kind offer is of course: yes, I would certainly like to get a high res. scan of this photo as my collecting/researching is an ongoing affair. I was trying give you my home e-mail address off-board but unfortunately your in-box is pouring over so that my message jumped back. Regards Jochen |
Re: Me 109 loss photo - 23 kills
I knew Heinz fairly well, and this is indeed an interesting photo. The circumstances of his capture were also somewhat amusing, as he mistook an allied tank column for German, descended for a better look, and got nailed by AA fire.
