...Got Don Caldwell's new book; Early on, I came across a unit abbreviation that I was not able to find a definition for (heck I'm just too lazy to look actually...):

Of course, we're still not totally sure that was what the acronym stood for, though; |

Good grief.............
I would translate it as Fighter Instructor Examination (or Testing) Group. The British Air Ministry's Manual of German Air Force Terminology translates it as Fighter Tactical Experimental Group. Maybe Caldwell has a better translation. L. |

Nick, Don & Others -
I found some additional information on it in my notes. Here is how it appears in contemporary Lw. documents while at Orléans-Bricy: School Units: Jagdlehrerüberprüfungsstelle (Oct 42); Jagdlehrerüberprüfungsgruppe (Nov 42 – Aug 43). And here is an alternate translation provided by RAF intelligence in 1944-45: Fighter Instructors' Refresher Group. It was organized in accordance with KStN 1886 (L) and had a Stab, 1. (Einsatz-) Staffel and 2. (Übungs-) Staffel, these being an operational and a training squadron respectively. Its Feldpost Nr. was L 53680. Its title and organization pretty well indicate its function and mission: to provide refresher training to fighter instructors, test them and then either re-certify them or wash them out. In a sampling of 50 of its losses between Aug 42 and Jun 44, only 5 were due to enemy action. The others were all crashes, accidents, engine failures, etc. This suggests that it was almost exclusively engaged in training. L. |
