Luftwaffe daylight raid 9th November 1940

Hello all,

I'm trying to establish which unit a HE111, which dropped bombs in Shropshire at midday on the 9th November 1940, could have been from. From 54 AA Brigade HQ War Diary, we have the following:
"Daylight Ops. Raid 21 passed to the west of the gun zone and dropped bombs wide of the VP at Ironbridge. Enemy aircraft, although seen and identified as a HE111, was never in range of the LG at this VP. 12.12 hrs. 2 HE bombs and one UXB. Damage - nil".

Can anyone tell me what Luftwaffe units were operating that day and what targets were they bombing? Out of curiosity, did they lose any bombers this day also?

Many thanks,

Tom

I have recorded in my book 'The Luftwaffe's Blitz' a number of daylight attacks that day. The nearest would have been by a Ju 88 of I/KG 77 at Elmdon and a KG1 aircraft to Birmingham. All the others are White Waltham, London, Hastings, Torquay, Newton Abbott, Cropredy, Harwich, Portsmouth and Norfolk Coast

Thanks for the replies!

The KG1 raid on Birmingham sounds promising? Do you have any further details, Chris? Purely out of interest, could you also tell me what the Cropredy incident was (my brother lives there!)?

The incident is well remembered in the area, so no confusion with regards to the time of day. I'd be interested if you turn anything else up also Sharon?

Thanks,

Tom

The attacks were at 1230 hrs UK time but I cannot add much more apart from what was dropped & they were Ju 88s as opposed to He 111s. the attack on Cropredy occurred at 1128 hrs. 2 Ju 88s of I/KG 54 were after an aluminium factory at Banbury. One went for the alternate target but the other dropped some bombs on a rly line at Cropredy and then attacked the factory

Thanks Chris,

that's scuppered my thought that it was the KG1 raid! I had thought that they flew HE111's (after 'googling' them)!

Oh well, I've a few other daylight raids that I would like to try and identify, so I'll try my luck with those on another thread!

Cheers,

Tom
