Re: USA fighter crashed around Salerno summer 1943. Some idea?
The numbers on pump "40590 A" and "...3637..." give you some idea? The pump appear to be of a Allison engine. So we find a P-38 or A-36 crash site. Do you have informations about P-38 or A-36 crashed south of Salerno in summer of 1943? The pilot was KIA. I believe no other USA fighters can go to Salerno area from Sicily in that time.

Matteo,
Can't help you with the parts you've found, but on 18-9-43 the 86th FBG lost an A-36 which was last seen at Colliano according 525th FS reports. Pilot was Lt Thomas "Fred" Fouts (KIA, A-36A, 42-83888). Another A-36A (42-83881 with Lt William Strainis, KIA) went down at Fisciano on the same day. Regards, Leendert |

Matteo,
Another A-36 loss was 42-83976 on 27-9-1943 with F/O Dewey L. Gossett (527 FBS/86 FBG). Squadron reports say no exact location: "...last seen in narrow canyon...". Gossett is still missing and commemorated as such at Cambridge, England. Regards, Lendert |
