Proper Orientation of the JG 3 "Udet" Insignia?

1 Attachment(s)
Hi;

attached is an image of the insignia of JG 3, "Udet" (image source is the Wikipedia page on JG3.)

I dimly recall a long-past discussion where it was asserted that the emblem was always painted with the "U" to the fore, regardless of which side of the aircraft it was painted on. Is this the case, or was the insignia orientation the same on both sides of the aircraft?

Thanks!

Paul

Hi Paul,

As you said, the "U" was usually painted to the fore. The exception is II/JG3, that painted the emblem as in your attached image in both sides, so in the left side the "U" pointed to the rear.
However this is not a rule. You can find II/JG3 planes with the emblem painted as in the other three Gruppen.
What you see almost always in II/JG3 is the red dot painted below the emblem.
Hope that this helps.

Best regards
Miguel

Hi Paul

A safe bet would be with the U painted foward for both sides. I have found very few II./JG3 machines with the U reverse pointing rearwards but perhaps Miguel has a different set of images then me!

Chris

PS still waiting your daukelbuch Bf110D for CFS2 :-)
