DFC Citation Needed

Gents,

Looking for the citation for P/O Leslie Frederick Smith RAFVR. He was awarded his DFC when serving on 218 sqn at Downham Market during 1942-43.I have checked Carters DFC, no joy. He was subsequently shot down by an ME110 on the night of 7th Sep 1943 when he was a screen pilot on 1657 HCU at Stradishall supervising a Sgt Gilkes and his crew in Stirling W7455.He died in Newmarket hospital on 8th Sep 1943.

Any help appreciated

Regards

Steve

Hi Steve

According to Matons "Honour the Air Forces" you need to check 136933 L F Smith in the London Gazette of 14 5 1943 on page 2156 - whether you will just see his name in a list that came up with the rations or an actual citation I have no idea.

Best of luck - please advise

Allan

Hi Alex & Allan,

Thank you both for the posts, sadly no joy with the citation but thank you for the links.

Kind regards

Steve

Re: DFC Citation Needed

Steve,
My understanding of the citations in the London Gazette, is that if an award was posted to the LG, without a citation (which happened in numerous cases; the New Years Honours, and Birthday Honours, in particular, but also most awards of the DFM), then almost by definition, there is no citation anywhere. What you would have to do in this case is to locate the recommendation for the DFC you are interested in, which can be found in Air 2 at the NA/PRO. Unfortunately this is not indexed. I no longer have the details of how to locate the entry in Air 2. Someone here may know (you have to call someone deep within the RAF), or the staff at NA/PRO should be able to advise you.

Enjoy!

Frank.
