Info on crash of Bf110 in the late-1940 or early-41 period

Hello,

Have photos of what appears to be Bf110 WNr3422 or 3428 crash landed and 100% written off, apparently in France, in late 1940 or early 1941. Can't find reference to either W.Nr. to end of 1940 in our EoE records. Does anyone have info on the loss of either of these W.Nr., probably in early 1941 before the unit left the channel coast? A/c is coded 3U+KT of 9./ZG26.

Thanx for your help.

Regards,

Hello Larry,

GQM losses, reel 2 says about 3422 that this Bf110C of III./ZG 26 crashed at airfield St.Aubin, on 29 Sept. 1940, crew unhurt, 80%

This crash is also mentioned in the wellknown books of Mason (Battle of Britain page 422) and John Vasco's Zerstörer (I guess) page 234.

One restrictive remark on the Werkenummer: according to GQM reel 7, Werkenummer 3422 crashed again in september 1942 with the 3./ZG 1, also 80% damage so 3422 is not rock solid.

All the best, Marcel

Hello Marcel,

Thanks for your comments. The photos show the aircraft with the tail and rear fuselage completely torn away, plus major wing damage on one side. It seems unlikely that this a/c would have been worth repairing. An 80% loss indicates very, very serious damage and essentially a write off. This doesn't seem to square with a later loss in 9.42.

Otherwise, the date 29 Sept. 1940 does match up with the white nose carried by the a/c, as does the unit (III./ZG26). Unless someone can turn up a better candidate with a W.Nr. 3428, this is probably the correct identification.

Much appreciated.

Concerning these 3422 + 3428, Rössler gave a production date on beg. 1940, but log of Kaden , indicate flights for acceptance/calibration on Sept. 40 ...

One further fly in the proverbial ointment is that the production batch 3419-3462 is shown in the Petrick/Mankau book as E-1s, built between August and October 1940 by Messerschmitt works...

Re: Info on crash of Bf110 in the late-1940 or early-41 period

The 29-Sep-40 loss was reported as a Bf 110C by the usual sources, which could be a typo in the records, but I have another loss for WNr. 3422 as a Bf 110E. Does anyone have any other example of a 110C being upgraded to a 110E? WNr. 3222 is missing in my database, so Matti may be entirely correct, particularly given Larry's description of the wreck. Does anyone have any idea when he may have posted that WNr?

Bf 110E-1, 3422, n.n., , I., 3., ZG 1, , , DD+YB, , 30-Sep-42, Rammed Kl 35 WNr. 3070 during landing due to poor visibility., , Lfl.4/Eins.Osten, Gen.Qu.6.Abt. (mfm #7)-Vol.11; Vasco, The Sting of the LW, p.134, , Obliwskaja, 80%, F, , ,

In the 110C-110E category I have this, which certainly has to be a mistake (me or the records?):

Bf 110C-7, 3418, Herzog, Ofw. Karl, , II., 6., ZG 26, gelbe P, 3U+JP, , , 07-Oct-40, Crew KIA due to Luftkampf with Spitfire from 609 Sq. (F/L Robinson)., Luftkampf with Hurricane from 238 Sq. south of Yeovil per Menke. Also Bf 110D from post-production test flights., Kanal, Gen.Qu.6.Abt. (mfm #2)-Vol.3; Vasco/Cornwell, Zerstörer, p.235; Ring, ZG 26 loss list; Mason, p.436; BoB, T&N, p.679; Menke, SKZ list, , Kingston Russell Dairy Farm, Long Bredy bei Dorchester, 100%, F, Bf Ogefr. Herbert Schilling, 16.30,

I agree with Remi that it is 3222. It was built as a C-2 by Focke-Wulf in January 1940. Stkz. VB+TA.

Afternoon Norbert, following on from your last post,
is W.Nr 3222 VB+TA part of a full batch of Bf110C-2's coded up to VB+TZ?
Any help would be most helpful.

Kindest regs,
Steve.

Re: Info on crash of Bf110 in the late-1940 or early-41 period

Hi Steve,
yes it goes to VB+TZ WNr. 3247. But they are not all C-2 models. Some are C-4 and VB+TX WNr. 3245 is a D model later on.

Regards,
Norbert
