P40E/P39Q $ cost per unit

Hi all

Has anyone got any idea of the cost per unit of a P40E and a P39Q in 1943. Believe P40E's were $42,000 or so although no idea about the P39Q. More of less. More produced the cheaper they became.

A $ figure would be interesting to know.

regards

some cost info

Hello
I don't have any exact info on P-40E/P-39Q but Dean in America's Hundred Thousend (1997) writes that the unit cost of a P-39 varied from $ 51 000 to $ 72 000 and that between 13.11.40 and 21.8.41 694 Curtiss H81A-2s and -3s were produced for the UK and for the Flying Tigers - prices were from $35 876 to $36 746.
William D. White in US Tactical Air Power (1974) gives the average unit cost of a P-40 as $54 000 and adds that it is appr. $200 000 in 1975 $.

Thanks for that.

I have a few indicators from record cards

41-13390 P40C cost $48,148.00

41-13570 P40E cost $39,628.00

Trouble is I am not aware whether the cost from Curtis was with/without propellor, radio, guns etc which I beleive were often extras?

Interestigly the $9000 difference for a newer aircraft seems to come from the fact that as more were produced the cheaper they became.

I see that the P39Q is listed on the net as $46,000 and am assuming the earlier examples were more expensive. Again I do not know whether this is the 'basic' aircraft without extras.

A bit more research required.

Thnaks tfor the info

Simply adjusting for inflation, that $48,148.00 P-40, would be $519,466.00 in 2003 USD.

These $ figures are actually quite fascinating. Now, dare I ask what a 1944-1945 Me 262 cost?

Or the 1943 Bf 109Gs and Fw 190As for that matter.

It would also be nice to know the figure for the Viermots, like the B-17F/G.

The prices quoted often do not include GFE - Government Furnished Equipment - which could include engines/guns/bomb site/radios/etc etc..
