Uffz Wolfgang Kirschbaum

On 24/7-1940 Uffz Wolfgang Kirschbaum was laid to rest in Hansted cemetery in Denmark. He was found washed ashore near Hansted. He is by WASt recorded as having died on 11/5-1940. He now rest in Grove cemetery.
According to a note in the loacl newspaper on 25/7 he is said to have been a member of the Luftwaffe.
Can anyone tell me where and how he was killed ?
And to which unit he belonged ?
Which plane was he flying ?

Re: Uffz Wolfgang Kirschbaum

Matti,

I make no claim that it's 'better' but here is the information that I have. Regret that I have nothing on Uffz HOFFMANN.

2./KüFlGr. 806 Heinkel He111J. Badly damaged by escort Hudsons of No. 224 Squadron (P/O Bradshaw, P/O Greenway, and P/O Hurley) during attack on British naval flotilla RZ and ditched in the sea off Denmark during return flight 3.30 p.m. BF Fw Rainer Herchenbach and FF Uffz Wolfgang Kirschbaum both killed, BO Lt zur See Heinz Brücker and BM Fw Friedrich Berges both missing. Aircraft M7+BK 100% write-off.
This aircraft radioed that it was making a forced-landing but required no assistance. The bodies of Wolfgang Kirschbaum and Rainer Herchenbach later came ashore on the Danish coast and were both originally buried at Hansted.

Re: Uffz Wolfgang Kirschbaum

Thanks Peter for additions and correction (name Herchenbach). My info comes from NVM, which understandably could't contain your detailed info in 1940.

Referring to the parish register of Hjörring it appeares that Herchenback was found washed ashore on Tornby beach on 24/7-40 and was laid to rest in Hjörring cemetery on 26/7-40. He now rest in Grove.

Matti and Peter
Will it be all right with you two gentlemen if I use the information given by you on my site "Airwar over Denmark" - www.Flensted.eu.com ?
I will surely give credit.

Credit is not so important, but helping people, who need information, is. Please feel free to use any info from me to any meaningful aviation historical purpose. If we keep all collected info only in our own closed cabinets, research will be frustrating and misleading.
Opes society and cooperation is the key to success.
