Last P-51 Mustang Shot Down by a Fw-190
One of the Osprey books --"P-51 Mustang vs Fw 190: Europe 1943-45" by Martin Bowman has the following statemnt:
"The last P-51 Mustang downed by an Fw-190 is claimed west of Prague by the leading Schlacht ace (w/ 116v) Oblt. August Lambert of Schlachtgeschwader 77" Can anyone verify this claim? I've thought that the last P-51 downed by a Fw-190 was the one shot down by Walther Dahl on April 26,1945. |
Re: Last P-51 Mustang Shot Down by a Fw-190
I think the important part of the sentence is "by a Fw 190".
Starting from 17 April 1945, the day Lambert was killed, I have the following P-51 claims known: 17/04/1945 n.n. III. SG 77 P-51 - - - - yes JaPo: FW190F;G 17/04/1945 Oblt. August Lambert III. SG 77 P-51 n.b. - - n.b. - no JaPo: FW190F;G 19/04/1945 Oberstltn. Heinz Bär Stab III. EJG 2 P-51 - - - - yes F/H: Me 262 Combat Diary 19/04/1945 Oberstltn. Heinz Bär Stab III. EJG 2 P-51 - - - - yes F/H: Me 262 Combat Diary 20/04/1945 Ltn. Karl Broo 5. JG 53 P-51 - - 12 - yes Prien: JG 53 List 25/04/1945 Uffz. Peter Köster JV 44 P-51 Raum Salzburg - - - yes F/H: Me 262 Combat Diary 25/04/1945 Uffz. Peter Köster JV 44 P-51 Raum Salzburg - - - yes F/H: Me 262 Combat Diary 26/04/1945 Oberst Walter Dahl Stab III. EJG 2 P-51 Raum Dillingen - - - yes F/H: Me 262 Combat Diary 26/04/1945 Ofw. Paul Meier 14. JG 53 P-51 - - 1 - yes Prien: JG 53 List 26/04/1945 Ofw. Paul Meier 14. JG 53 P-51 - - 2 - yes Prien: JG 53 List EJG 2 was a Me 262 unit, JG 53 was using Bf 109, so the last KNOWN claims by Fw 190 pilots against P-51 are those done by SG 77 on 17 April 1945. The thing being that Lambert claimed only a probable while an unknown pilot claimed a full victory. |

From Rammjaeger by Walter Dahl p 222
"...mir einer inzwiachen organisiert Fw-190" "Die Mustang kurvt ein und fliegt direkt in meine Geschossgarbe.." In his book he was clearly flying a Fw-190 |
Re: Last P-51 Mustang Shot Down by a Fw-190
.....has some great 'stories' ..but as a reliable source Dahl's book is as good as useless..surely everybody knows that by now

Re: Last P-51 Mustang Shot Down by a Fw-190
True, yet surely, even Walter Dahl knew what kind of airplane he was flying on a particular date, if he specifically noted the A/c type.
The inaccuracies of his book are more with reported victories than any other thing. There are other parts of the book that correct or at least, appear to be correct. |
Re: Last P-51 Mustang Shot Down by a Fw-190
One late war P-51 Mutang loss not shown in the Luftwaffe victory listing was the loss of a French AF P-51 Mustang to enemy A/C on April 17,1945
On April 17,1945 two P-51 of 2/33 Belfort flown by Lt.s Sainflou and Delegue took off at 0910 to perform a reconaissance mission. Between Nuertigen and Kirchheim they spotted a dozen enemy aircrafts, identified as Me-109s circling. Lt. Sainflou called Lt. Delegue on the R/T but received no reply. At that instant, two Me-109s detached from the formation and attacked the two Mustangs. Lt. Sainflou escaped while Lt. Delegue went down in flames. JG-53 did report combat with two P-51s but reported these escaped. |

Lt. Guenther Landt of 11/JG 53 claimed a Spitfire at 1145. Could it have been a misidentification?
