Ju 88 loss 22.05.1940 Oblt.Hagen 8./LG1

Hi Guys,

Today I am searching for information on the loss of Oblt. Theodor Hagen and his crew on the 22nd May 1940. The aircraft was a Ju 88A (L1 + FS) of 8./LG1. I would like to know who the rest of the crew were and of course their fate. Would be great if someone out there has the WASt Verlustmeldung for this loss.

Kind regards,

Melvin

Melvin,

According to the EoE loss DB: "May 22, 1940: 8./LG1 Junkers Ju88A-1 (4003). 8./LG1 Junkers Ju88A-1. Starboard engine destroyed by Spitfires during
attack on the tanker Clairy west of Boulogne, belly-landed and burned out near Montreuil. Probably that claimed by P/O Smart and F/Sgt Franklin of No. 65 Squadron off Calais 2.00 p.m. BS Gefr Günther Glogger killed. FF Oberlt Theodor Hagen, BO Oberfw Reinhold Britting, and BF Uffz Helmut Döring unhurt - later returned. Aircraft L1+FS 100% write-off."

Photo in today shows 4003 was coded "E". Otherwise details match for Ju 88 A-1 very early version. Melvin, what exact source did you have for code L1+FS on this plane?
(Discounting LH photos, they are inconclusive re E or F as true code)

Hi Ed,

Firstly Happy New Year!
I looked in my file and don't have the source for the L1+FS code, I annot remember who might have given me the original info on the loss. Can we now confirm that the aircraft was coded L1+ES. I can then correct the error.

Kind regards,

Melvin

OK, thanks, HNY too. No we can not. At least at one time 0884003 had code "E" but it does not show the other letters all, but next letter shows partial "S". And this photo is taken before crash. At unknown airfield or landing site. ON the LH EOE photos the "F" can be damaged at the bottom and only appear as "F". So if that crash is "indentified" from that photo(s), the code, and thus crash or pilots onboard can be incorrect (matching wrong L1+FS / L1+ES), and theoretically there be both L1+FS and L1+ES crashes/losses. Three later Ju 88 A-1 / A-5 L1+ES are indentified with W.Nrs, giving four now. And there might be more hiding out there somewhere.

And there could be more variables, we do not know of yet.

Ed
