Red dot in US Stars

Hi all

Prewar and upto 1941 the red dot in the US Star.

Was wondering when this disappeared. Assuming mid 1942.

Re: Red dot in US Stars

May 12th 1942 for Army and Navy aircraft, according to Robert Archer.

War Department Circular #141

Otoh, Monogram Navy Paintguide mentions May 6th for USN a/c.

Perhaps someone here can provide more definite answers?

Re: Red dot in US Stars

This is what I found in Roger Freeman's "The Mighty Eighth Warpaint & Heraldy" regarding the meatballs (page 19):

...the US device was modified by the deletion of the central red disk. This introduction, notified to take effect from 15 May 1942, was endorsed by Technical Order T/O 07-1-1 of 1 June. Under this order the red centre was to be removed from the national insignia on all USAAF aircraft, combat or otherwise.

Perhaps this could be of some help...

Best Regards,
Christoph

Meatball

Christoph/Ruy,

Thanks for that. Seems to tie in exactly with the information on the aircraft.
