Three Ju 52/Sea - Norway 13.4.40
 

Hello,

I wonder if somebody could give me some details concerning the loss of three Ju 52/See from KGzbV108 on 13.4.40. I have read that some Norwegian warships were involved?

Thanks Matti. All a/c were returning to Bergen after a supply mission to Trondheim. Perhaps somebody could add details from Norwegian side?

From what I understand, they were floatplane versions of the Ju 52 and so were not shot down by the Norwegian ship, but sunk or damaged beyond repair in a sort of "naval battle".

But other sources say the patrol boat Hval IV was captured by the Germans on 11 April:

The correct patrol vessel that sank these three aircraft were "Hval V" and not "Hval IV". The "Hval V" was equipped with one 76 mm gun. It was built in 1929 and had a displacement of 248 tons and a crew of 18 under the command of Vpl.ltn. Th. Jacobsen.
On the 13. April 1940 "Hval V" received reports that two German transport aircraft had landed at Gangsöy in Vaagsfjorden after having passed over Maaløy. They were found and after some warnings to the German crews, shot up. The two crews were taken POW's. They also received reports of a third aircraft that had landed at Berle in Fröysjöen and the crew had gone ashore. When "Hval V" was sighted, they got on board the aircraft and tried to escape. However, "Hval V" opened fire immediately and the aircraft received a direct hit. The crew got ashore once again and surrenderes to the owner of a nearby farm. They were brought to "Hval V" as POW's. The following day, 14. April, all three aircraft were towed to deep waters and sunk. From documents found on the German crews, the three aircraft were on a return flight from Trondheim after having landed some troops there. Their final destination was Sylt.

thanks for these information guys. Seaplanes do you know the time of this action. I expect that it was in the afternoon, when the weather started to getting worse.

Unfortunately, no times are given in the report, but it seems that the whole operation was carried out during daylight so I would suppose from late morning to afternoon or evening. The German planes would have left Trondheim after daybreak in the early morning hours. The flying time to the landing area would have been about one to 1 1/2 hours. Why they landed I do not know.
