Luftwaffe Experten Message Board closed?

Dear all,

when trying to check new entries in Peter Evan`s highly appreciated LEMB forum I sadly had to verify that Peter closed (I hope it´s limited to some days?) the forum.

Reason is that many (few?) folks did not follow the LEMB guidelines.

Peter: Thank you very much for all your efforts. Living without LEMB is hard. I hope LEMB will re-opened soon!

Karl

I sent Peter an e-mail since I can only see a very small part of the board and not the forums. Hopefully, I will hear something soon or Peter himself will make an announcement. We'll see.

Best,
Ed

Not the first time Peter's done this but it was his forum and if he doesn't want to play anymore, I guess that's his privilege.

It clearly takes a huge time input and personal commitment from Peter to run the forum. Constantly having to amend posts must be enormously frustrating as it's time which could be profitably spent on other more fruitful endeavours.

Indeed Steve. Anyone who has had experience with any kind of database software for recording their research will know that you need a standard format for inputting commonly used terms. This is fundamental to enabling quick and accurate results when searching your database for all instances of these commonly used terms. This is why we ask that a standard format be used when inputting data onto LEMB. Not only that, the search function does not recognise a term when gaps are placed in between commonly used Luftwaffe abbreviations. For example typing Bf 109 E-1 will not bring up any results for the famous fighter but typing Bf109E-1 will bring up all instances of the term Bf109E-1 used in all topics on LEMB. The forum needs to be fully searchable for present and future users. Editing a lot of posts so they adhere to this format takes time and effort. Which could easily be done when the topic is created by the member in the first place. :)

Peter is certainly fully entitled to run his forum as he likes.

This said, IMHO probably some less strict and uncompromising (on the verge of "nitpicking") standards certainly would
have helped a lot to ease things and the life of both the moderator and the "moderated"...

Just my 2 cents.

Clint,
I agree with all you say, and I now understand the concern regarding the way to abbreviate aircraft names/variants/sub-variants.

However, if that is the only issue, why didn't he appoint more Moderators, divide up their responsibility with regard to new daily content (i.e. check through their allotted thread(s) and make amendments as needed), and stay on top of the abbreviation issue that way? I freely admit that I have been guilty of the errors of which you talk, not out of any deliberate attempt to be obtuse, but rather through over 30 years of work writing this in the Bf 110 C-4 fashion.

I hope Peter puts the board up again...

Ohhhhh... what a commotion over nothing!

No holiday needed here chaps, apart from kidney stones, I'm in perfectly good/rude health, but I really do appreciate the concern nonetheless chaps :)

I must say that it mildly amuses me that our taking a time out (so as to refocus the LEMB's memberships appreciation of our rules) has created such a stir here and elsewhere... and on a forum that many here seem quick to criticise, yet who still slip over to the LEMB on a daily basis hooving up all manner of data whilst contributing sweet FA. If any of you here who haven't already been banned (waves cheerfully at Franck, Christian at EdNorth :p) really hate the way its run that badly, just drop me a PM to let me know and I'll take great please in deleting your membership. Nobody ever forced you to join, but when you do, you ticked a box to abide by the rules. That has to be simple in anybody’s language! :D

That aside, for those interested, the LEMB will be back online and satisfying modellers, flight sim enthusiasts and the odd expert at some stage later today...

[slips back into lurk mode]

Cheers
Pete
