A unique Fw 190 D-9 shot!

Hi gang,

I just stumbled on a quite unique picture showing three Fw 190 D-9' revving up their engines prior to taxying, whilst fourth is parked behind next to a farm. This wintery scene is quite unique among the handful operational shots of D-9's...

No tactical sign or RV bands to be seen... I wonder which unit the belonged to.

Cheers

Interesting that the first 190 has a larger Hakenkreuz with a smaller filled in Balkenkreuz, as compared to the others with just white outline larger BalkenKreuz and smaller Hakenkreuz. White or Yellow rudder too perhaps?

Thanks for posting this!

Kind regards.

A unique Fw 190 D-9 shot!

Hi guys

Marc, very nice photograph that you found and thanks for bringing it to our attention. Oberst, if I am not mistaken the smaller Balkankreuz is evidence of this machine being a Fieseler built example of the 600 through 601 werknummer block. I can think of III./JG 54 and IV./JG 3 which did not use Gruppe tactical markings on their Doras...

Horrido!

Leo

Yes, III./JG 54 and IV./JG 3 do come to mind.

Just a thought.. Delivery flight perhaps?

You're all welcome!

Very interesting, Oberst and Leo; this Balkenkreuz diversity does give a clue after all... Checking back on Michael Holms site we have:

- for III./JG 54, the possible airfields are Varrelbusch or Handrup/Fürstenau.
- for IV/JG 3, the possible airfields are Störmede, Gütersloh, Stargard or Prenzlau.

Still quite a selection to choose from.

Cheers

Hey there,
in the close-up on the original ebay site you can see a II. Gruppe-bar on all three Doras in the foreground..

Christian

My best guess is that they belonged to 7. /JG 26 and was photographed during autumn 1944 before the black and white bands was painted on in early 1945.
I think there is a photo in Urbankes book of a Fieseler built Dora from 7. /JG 26 with this type of very light (brown) color on the II Gruppe bar.

If you encrease the detailshot on your screen, a yellow/brown 5 is possibly faintly visible...

Best regards,

Philippe
