For those who care about such things, there appears to be a significant error in the marginalia written on eBay.com photo item ending in 36186. This photograph is that of a captured Axis aerodrome with the skeletal remains of a steel girder hangar in the background and the port side of a Ju 52/3m empennage in the left foreground. The Ju 52/3m fin displays the WNr. 6158, partial Tr.KZ "DZ," and Takt.KZ "D 3 D." Written in the front bottom margin is "Catania Air Drome." It seems, however, that the image is not of Fl.Pl. Catania at all but is of El Aouina (Tunis), Tunisia. The Ju 52/3m WNr. 6158 is reported in HQ NWAAF A-2 Capt. Intell. Tech. Rept. No. 114, p. 1, Entry No. 8, 18.05.43, as found "completely burned out" at El Aouina, ca. Apr.-May 1943. There are two possible explanations for the above discrepancy: (1) the photograph seller made a mistake in labeling his item, or (2) the veteran who made the original image wrongly identified it. I believe the odds favor explanation no. 2. RA |
