4 captured British heavy bombers ?
Hello,
While browsing the book "The Air War 1939-1945 " by Janusz Piekalkiewicz I came accross the following on Page 272. "Heavy Fighting on Kos Monday 4 October 1943, Berlin The German News Bureau reported: ......Among the captured equipment were 4 heavy British bombers." What were these bombers ( serial numbers, Squadron etc ) and what became of them ??? Thanks Alex |
Re: 4 captured British heavy bombers ?
The recent Brian Cull book Fighters over the Aegean gives a pretty full account of the operation. There is no mention of any heavy bombers, and it is not clear why there would have been. The Germans captured a number of Spitfires of 74 and 7(SAAF) Squadrons. A number of Dakotas are described as being damaged, to various degrees, by Luftwaffe attacks and I suspect these wrecks would be the aircraft referred to.
