Re: Bomber Command Target References
I have had a similar question regarding 99 Sqn operation. Where would one - as a general rule - find the "translation"? In the ORB appendicies, in the Group ORB or?

Re: Bomber Command Target References
Steve surely it's worth asking Ross on RAF Commands he provided the response to your first query?

Re: Bomber Command Target References
Hi Mikkel,
There might be such a list in The National Archives in London which I hope to visit again this Spring. I do have some info from ORB's and appendices etc, so if you post the target references you're after I may be of some help. At the moment I've only info on Dutch and German target. Martin, A.336 = gas works at Bottrop A.248 = gas works at Essen Kind regards, Hans |

I did ask in the original post if a list was avialable. Given Ross did not volunteer that list or refer to it, I presumed one had not been found or made. I have a number of targets codes gleaned from various sources, but not from one single source. Hans has now given me a NA reference that I will on my next visit investigate. Steve |

I have had a terrible job finding the TNA file reference I promised you and only found it from my sub-list of file references of interest, which referred to a view date, which then enabled me to locate it in my notebooks. I obviously missed my note twice! If you have a query about the TNA Catalogue reference, my reference is 102/09. My note as follows:- "AIR 20/2060" "Directives to Bomber Command D of Ops Home" noted. "Contains details of when bombing ops were [first] approved, targets, with target numbers, names and oil stored etc." [Example noted] "Mentions Ambes, Pauilac" [being Bordeaux targets 14/15th August 1940, Oil were Z target numbers]. My poor memory is unreliable, but leads me to think that all targets (other than oil) are also listed for this 1940 period? Hope this helps, regards Mark |

BC OPS 'Raid Sheets' A chap called Cyril from 218 Association attends the 77 Sqn Reunion and I noted a mid August 1940 night (my particular research night) example for 218 Sqn mentioned in Volume III (cat., number not noted on photocopies, but believed to be Air 14/2666 per current TNA search) of the 7 volume series of 1940 night "Raid Sheets" of Bomber Command Groups, known as a 'Summary of Operations' teleprinted to the War Room Whitehall mentioning two aircraft from 218 Sqn (under 2 Group) which states "carried out a successful operational routine practice". Gives raid number and place name locations, but only SOME target reference numbers. The Day ... Raid Sheets are AIR 14/3360 & 61 (not viewed). These are not the same as the returning crew Intelligence Signals of raids found in Station ORBs, or B.C. Intelligence, nor the same as the Forms E of the Groups. But they do note lost aircraft with an aircraft serial for most of the lost aircraft, also whether a lost aircraft had completed their mission too, is sometimes confirmed. CORRECTION re 1940 'Raid Sheets' Just looking through a few August 1940 photocopy samples of the 'Raid Sheets' to various places (all apparently named) for the different Groups operating, some Groups DO give target reference numbers and some Groups DON'T on the Raid Sheets.
