He 111 - Painting of Forced Landing

A colleague has acquired this painting by Geoff Stephens. It depicts a He 111 having made a crash-landing on the European mainland after ops over the UK.

I am fairly certain this is painted from a photograph, and although I have seen the photograph I cannot recall where or what the story might be.

Can anyone help?
