P-51 vs FW-190D Combat -April 4,1945

Sort of a long shot.but here goes, On April 4,1945. the 355 FG, 354th FS lost two P-51Ds in combat with FW-190Ds over Ludwiglust A/F. Both pilots were KIA.

Can anyone identify the Luftwaffe unit? Some correspondence some time ago identified the unit as JGr10 flying FW190Ds as Airfield defense but I'm looking for more corroboration. One Fw-190D was shot down by Lt. Al White.

I have a number of D-9 losses on 4 April 1945, but they do not appear to be related to the incident that you describe, i.e. two 5./JG 2 aircraft over Mühlhausen and five I. and II./JG 26 aircraft in the Lingen area (but the latter all encountered Tempests).

Looking at 07 April, however, there I have two D-9s lost to the 355 FG / 354 FS - these aircraft were in all probability escort to the Kommando Elbe. Regrettably, I do not know the Unit of these D-9s.

It's not much, but I hope it helps.

It is a small point but Lt Thomas Truell was KIA when he split S too low in an attempt to get on the tail of the Fw 190 passing below him. Goth was KIA when the 190D slipped out of the low clouds, hit him, and immdeiately went back into the cloud cover trying to avoid White.

This was 4 April. Perhaps neither German pilot was aware that the Mustangs crashed and therefore made no claim.

Hi.

Wasn't parts of JG 1 transferring in to Ludwigslust about that time. I believe they had a mix of FW 190 A and D on strength, using Ludwigslust as basis for their He 162's also?

Should at least be checked if the aerial combat took place near that airfield.

There is a school of opinion that this fight was actually around Salzwedel rather than Ludwiglust. Fighter pilots are not reknowned for precise navigation in near 10/10 clod cover.

BTW 357FS/355FG Lt Cooper hit a Do 335 hard but it escaped into the cloud cover further south.

The 4th was the worst air to air loss for the 355th since August 3, 1944 when the 355th lost three in air to air combat
