Dear Ed,

Back in 2009 Gleichmann published a book on roughly the same subject:

Gleichmann, Markus, and Karl-Heinz Bock, Düsenjäger über dem Walpersberg, Die Geschichte des interirdischen Flugzeugwerkes „REIMAHG” bei Kahla/Thüringen, Heinrich-Jung-Verlagsgesellschaft mbH, Zella-Mellis / Meiningen, Germany, c. 2009.

The older book is in German and runs 176 pages. The new book is in 5 languages, but only runs 118 pages and is a Bildband (photo book).

An extensive photo book on the same subject was published in 2009:

Brion, Patrick, "REIMAHG" - A pictorial History / "REIMAHG - Geschichte in Bildern, c. 2009.

Brion's book is a well-researched 275 pages. This was to be followed by an all-text history, but, so far, I've heard no word on its publication.

There are other books covering the same subject.

Hallo Ed,

...and in 1995 the first(?) REIMAHG-book was published, "Deckname LACHS, die Geschichte der unterirdischen Fertigung der Me 262 in Walpersberg bei Kahla 1944/45". Written in German by Klaus W. Müller/ Willy Schilling. 86 pages with photos.

I live in Thuringia, but I never heard of a town called Zella-Mellis. And I miss a book by an American author on the subject that told us Germans how it really was. *LOL*

You spotted a couple of typos on my part. The correct entry should be:

Some German authors haven't a clue, either. A lot of what comes out is a result of the extent of the research conducted by the author.

I have bought some books in German about various late-war activities that include more references to American documents than books written by Americans. In one case, I used a German to English dictionary to translate the first several pages. Very enlightening.

Dear All,

I received my copy of this book yesterday.

The printing quality is quite good. The book text is in 5 languages: German, English, Russian, Italian, and Dutch. Each image is described in all 5 languages. Text is relatively minimal and most is not new information. The source of each photo is identified in the lower right corner with a few letter code, the codes explained on page 117, nice and concise. Seven literature references are given but, beyond that, there aren't footnotes or chapter notes to support the text.

Perhaps the stronger 2 points of the book are more background on the forced labor situation and coverage of the numerous postwar commemoration ceremonies, these latter being shown in well produced color photos. Gleichmann expands his coverage of the underground and concentration camp situation to cover Thuringia, not just REIMAHG Kahla. There is some photo coverage on what the tunnels in the Walpersberg look like today.

Being somewhat of a nutter on REIMAHG Kahla, almost all of the photos are familiar to me, but may not be to others. The one area where I got a bit nervous about the author's claims was when he described what was produced in each bunker. For instance, he describes a well-known NARA II photo of Bunker 1 with:

"The western side of Bunker 1, which contained the fuselage assembly line."

Or, regarding Bunker 4:

"View toward the south side of the Walpersberg, Right: Bunker 4 (wing assembling) and a factory hall to the left."

I've never seen any photos of the Me 262's in the buildings other than those in final assembly. And, these were undoubtedly from the batch(es) of parts shipped into Kahla, rather than any insitu production. Perhaps the fuselage and wing assembly lines in the bunkers were planned, but I very much doubt that they existed at the time of capture. Now, I'd love to be proven wrong.
