Innsbruck Austria 1945
 

This is the subject that brought me to this forum. My main focus had been Me 262 white 1+s found at the east airfield but a number of aircraft types were found on both fields so I wanted to start a thread that's open to all information.

The east airfield was in the Reichenau district of Innsbruck. Part 6 of Papa's War
http://www.pierce-evans.org/pwcover.htm has a little info about the 262 and the nosed over stuka. At the bottom of http://www.103didww2assn.org/photos.htm click on phase 111. It has a number or pics from both fields. One shows what I think is a lockheed lodestar c-56 c-60, sitting behind white 1, with a damaged nose and in french colors.

Innsbruck (AUS) (a.k.a. Innsbruck-Reichenau, Innsbruck/Ost) (47 16 30 N – 11 25 20 E)
General: pre-war civil airport (Zivilflughafen) in Austria 2.5 km ENE of Innsbruck city center and just S of the Inn River. History: the Luftwaffe began using it in 1938 after the Anschluss but no record has been found of any Luftwaffe units having been permanently stationed there. Surface and Dimensions: well-kept grass surface measuring approx. 640 x 550 meters (700 x 600 yards) and rectangular in shape. Infrastructure: had 2 small hangars with paved aprons, plus 1 medium hangar. Admin buildings were on the N boundary near the small hangars and a barracks complex was off the N boundary. Nearest rail connection in Innsbruck. Dispersal: no organized dispersals. Defenses: protected by the Innsbruck Flak belt.
Remarks: the Innsbruck marshaling yards were bombed numerous times by 15th AAF heavy bombers between Dec 43 and Dec 44, but the airfields there do not appear to have been intentionally targeted.
Feb 45: airfield still listed as operational.
Operational Units: none identified.
Station Commands: Fl.Pl.Kdo. A 31/VII (1943 – Mar 44); Fl.Pl.Kdo. Innsbruck of Fl.H.Kdtr. A(o) 1/VII Bad Aibling (Apr 44 – May 45).
Station Units (on various dates – not complete): none identified.

Just to add that the Ju 87s and the Fw 190 were on the western airfield, Innsbruck-Hötting. They were aircraft of Nachtschlachtgruppe 9, evacuated from northern Italy at the end of April 1945. At first sight the belly landed He 11 appears to be at Hötting as well.
