Hello,
I'm looking for a good resolution scan of the photo showing Pilot Ludwig Becker in the cockpit of a Do 215 of IV./NJG 1. Can anyone help? Thank you! /Mike |

Hi Mikael,
This is a Crest/Wappen I would normally associate with NJG2, but if you say it is IV/NJG1 I'll take your word for it and go back to the drawing board: http://www.gyges.dk/heraldics.htm bregds SES |

SES,
IV./NJG 1 was till 1.10.1942 II./NJG 2 So maybe it is not necessairy to go back to the drawingboard. Jaap |

Thanks for the comment Jaap!
Another option (not relevant in this case since Jaap presented a good explanation) is also with the common transfer of aircraft between units I doubt that they removed the old emblem to paint on their own version of the emblem since they were so similar. Most likely they just changed the Vbkz, not even always doing that. Mike |
Re: Photo of Ludwig Becker in Do 215 of IV./NJG 1
Hi Mikael,
That is a theoretical possibility, but IMHO remote. The unit Wappen is a part of unit identity and flying with the Wappen of another unit could be tolerated for a short while, but it would be changed the second circumstances allowed. Yes I have seen examples of transfer between units without change of Vbkz, but that did probably not last for long either. It is (among other things) a question of being able to identify the parent unit, when one comes across a crashed a/c maybe with hard to identify crew members. bregds SES |
