RNLI rescue Orkneys 1940
Hi guys
During the Battle of Britain an RNLI lifeboat rescued a German airman who had broken both legs following a bale out over the Orkneys. Any information, please? Cheers Brian |

Brian, this is a little vague--no time line or other info? what's the source as that might help narrow it down.

There may be something in Les Taylor's "Luftwaffe Over Scotland: A History of German Air Attacks on Scotland, 1939-45."
It's a while since I read it (borrowed from a friend) so I can't say for sure. |
Re: RNLI rescue Orkneys 1940
Hi guys
As the RNLI made only a few rescues during 1940, I thought someone might have a list. My information comes from a small book printed at the end of the war, called 'STORM ON THE WATERS: The story of the Life-Boat Service in the War.' It implies that 18, mainly British, airmen were rescued in 1940 by the Life-Boat Service (later to become the Royal National Lifeboat Instritution = RNLI). Therefore only a few German airmen were rescued. I have a copy of 'Luftwaffe over Scotland' but it is out on loan! Cheers Brian |
Re: RNLI rescue Orkneys 1940
Brian,
There was a Ju88 shot down by Hoy on 17-10-39 with a crewman baling out with a broken leg - Uffz Fritz Ambrosous Ju88A-1 4D+EK 2/KG30. Any possibility this could be your man, Regards Brian Bines |
