January 5,1944 Bordeaux-Merignac mission JG-2 victory claimants

Just trying to understand some more about the activities of JG-2 and its actions against the 8th AF B-17 mission to Bordeaux-Merignac A/F.

The 3rd BD -94,96,385,388, & 447 B-17 groups participated on this mission. The losses were 5 B17s - 96th BG; 4 B-17s - 94th BG; 1 B-17 388th BG; & 1 B-17 447th BG. The formation was escorted by the 78th FG which lost 5 P-47Ds to E/A action.

"Day Fighters Defense of the Reich 1942-1945" by Caldwell has the following kills by JG-2

Stab JG-2 - 1 B-17, 2 P-47s
I/JG-2 - 10 B-17s
II/JG-2 - 0
III/JG-2 - 5 B-17s, 2 P-47s

In addition there is a B-17 kill by II/JG-26 and 1 B-17 HSS by 2/JGr Ost.

Tony Wood's LW listing lacks most of these kills

The 4 P-47s are duly credited to Stab JG-2 and III/JG-2. The sole B-17 claim by II/JG-26 is noted and one B-17 claim by I/JG-2 is recorded. There is also a B-17 claim by 3./ZG-1. That's it. No claims by 2/JGr Ost

So, who were the claimants for JG-2 who shot down all these B-17s? There is a MACR record for all these B-17s in Fold3 and all were shot down by fighters.

Hi

The daily micro film entries for January 1944 are the only month that is missing from July 1942 until December 1944, however a sub list listing usually with disputed claims that were later confirmed exists, also a record of each staffels claims listing only date and time(no name, type e.t.c) exists for each Staffel.

This is what I found:-

Stabst./Jg2 1055 hrs Maj Egon Mayer P-47 NW Laval at 4500 metres(his 93rd)
Stabst./Jg2 1055 hrs Maj Egon Mayer P-47 Marennes area at 4500 metres(his 94th)
Stabst./Jg2 1100 hrs(without name e.tc).....should be Mayer really?
2./Jg2 1200 hrs Oblt Karl Haberland B-17 north of Rennes at 5500 metres.
3./Jg2 1102 hrs(without name e.t.c)
3./Jg2 1110 hrs(without name e.t.c)
Stab.I./Jg2 1047 hrs(without name e.t.c)
Stab.I./Jg2 1050 hrs(without name e.t.c)
Stab.I./Jg2 1112 hrs(without name e.t.c)
4./Jg2 1100 hrs(without name e.t.c)
4./Jg2 1100 hrs(without name e.t.c)
4./Jg2 1109 hrs(without name e.t.c)
4./Jg2 1130 hrs(without name e.t.c)
9./Jg2 1107 hrs Gefr Karlheinz Munsche P-47 at 3500 metres.
10./Jg2 1142 hrs(without name e.t.c)
11./Jg2 1111 hrs Oblt Bruno Siekmann P-47 at 4500 metres.
12./Jg2 1232 hrs(without name e.t.c)
12./Jg2 1235 hrs(without name e.t.c)
12./Jg2 1240 hrs(without name e.t.c)
12./Jg2 1242 hrs(without name e.t.c)

Hopefully somebody will be able to help fill in the missing names/Types for you.

Kind Regards

Johannes

Bonjour Carlos and Johannes,

thanks for your thread, quite interesting.
I can add something: I have several Abshussmeldungen of JG 2 and 1 particular concerns the Jan. 5 1944. This is for Uffz. Heinz Schneider (9./JG 2). It states that he claimed a Thunderbold at 11.08 hours, 5,6 km east of St James and 1,6 km north of St. Georges.
This claim was confirmed by his “Staffelführer”, Ofw. (not as stated Gefreiter) Karl-Heinz Munsche. In his declaration, Munsche also claimed a Thunderbolt.
So, we have at least 2 claims for the 9. Staffel.
This was the second Abschuss for Schneider, the 158 1/2 for 9. Staffel.

I hope that this helps.

Fredo

PS: By the way, I am searching on the claims of JG 2 on Jan. 3 1943. Can you have a look?

Hi Fredo

Curious about the Schneider claim!

With 5th January 1943, only III./Jg2 seems to have claimed, and all were B-17's!:-

7./Jg2 Uffz Wolgang Ortlepp 1134 hrs 5500 metres
7./Jg2 Lt Geprg-Peter Eder 1135 hrs 5500 metres
7./Jg2 Oblt Erich Hohagen 1137 hrs 5500 metres
8./Jg2 Uffz Friedrich May 1305 hrs 100 metres
9./Jg2 Oblt Siegfried Schnell 1142 hrs 6000 metres 10km SW Nazaire
9./Jg2 Ofw Ludwig Friedrich Hartmann 1145 hrs 5000 metres 10km SW Nazaire
9./Jg2 Lt Bruno Eder 1145 hrs 3000 metres
9./Jg2 Oblt Ferdinand Müller 1147 hrs 4000 metres
9./Jg2 Lt Hans Pelzl 1147 hrs 1500 metres A.S.M
9./Jg2 Oblt Siegfried Schnell 1147 hrs 4000 metres
9./Jg2 Fw Karlheinz Munsche 1200 hrs 1500-1000 metres
9./Jg2 Lt Karl Hofer 1201 hrs 1500 metres
Stab.III./Jg2 Oblt Egon Mayer 1132 hrs 6500 metres 4-6km SW Nazaire
Stab.III./Jg2 Lt Ottfried Philipp 1134 hrs 6800 metres
Stab.III./Jg2 Lt Fritz or Franz Rosle 1145 hrs 2000 metres
Stab.III./Jg2 Oblt Egon Mayer 1135 hrs(H.S.S) and Uffz Helmut Mosch(presumably E.V) 5km West of the Loire estuary at 6000 metres. the Staffel claim number is the same for both claims, i.e they claimed the same aircraft. It seems that only Jg2 did this share system on the micro films, there are several such entries!!!

Hope this helps

Kind Regards

Johannes

Johannes thank you,
Your list for the January 3, 1943 is in line with mine. I had some doubts relative to a list seen in a book in German.
Best Regards
Fredo
