Not PN but RN: 72 Sq.

Re: RAF Squadron "PN"
Hi there,
Code letters PN were used by 41 sqn, 252 sqn and 1552 RAT Flt. All in 'Squadron Histories' by Peter Lewis. Roy |
Re: RAF Squadron "PN"
PN was indeed used by 41 Sq on Spitfire Mk.Is prewar. Not however, by the other two units on Spitfires.
I thought I could see R not P on a couple of these aircraft, but they do otherwise look prewar. The problem then becomes the code on the sixth aircraft: ER, FR or GR? Only GR can fit, 92 Sq, but only after March 1940. As far as codes are concerned, Peter Lewis's book has been superseded by Combat Codes, by Vic Flintham and Andrew Thomas. It does however help to look in all the appropriate chapters. |
Re: RAF Squadron "PN"
If you blow up the picture sufficiently, you will see that all the aircraft are PN, including the one that does not look like it at first glance. A trick of the lighting and/or the resolution of the photo. It is PNoF or PNoP. And definitely pre-Battle of France - no tail markings. Also 2 blade props confirm MkIs.
