Trying to ID Luft PoW from 01.09.39 Shoot down of 4.(F)/14 Do17

Hello,

The EoE WG is trying to ID a man, identified only as "Lt. B" who was reported captured after his 4.(F)/14 Do17 was shot down in Poland on 01.09.39. We find no trace of this man in the NVM or of his plane in the Luft Loss records.

A propaganda book about this unit says that 2 x Do17s failed to return on 1 Sept. 1939, but the short, unofficial unit history makes no mention of this event. We have an account of a mysterious "Lt. B" being captured by the Poles, and Marius Emmerling has determined that one crew shot down from this unit on Sept. 1st, returned to German lines by the night of Sept. 2nd.

Can anyone ID this captured Luft "Lt B," or provide any further info or photos regarding either of these two Do17s, or their crews, that apparently went down on the first day of the war?

Who can help solve this mystery?

Regards,

Larry Hickey
