18 August 1940 - Me 110 loss

1 Attachment(s)
Whilst sorting through some images for something entirely unrelated I came across this photo of what seems to be U8 + BK on its back (presumably in France) and dated 18 August 1940 on the reverse.

Is this a 'new' image?

Can anybody provide the details?

Hi Andy,

This Bf110 (w/nr 3716) crashed on 18/08/1940 at Zillebeke (Belgium).

Details of the crew are unknown to me.

best regards

Luc

Andy,

This is a well-known incident. We have around a dozen images of this one in our EoE Luft Loss Photo DB, and it will probably be one of our color profile a/c.

According to our loss DB:

2./ZG26 Messerschmitt Bf 110D-0. Crashed at Ypres following combat with fighters during bomber escort sortie over southern England. Crew both unhurt. Aircraft U8+BK 100% write-off.

Luc has a W.Nr., and apparently a different location. We may need to update our info. Luc, what is the source of the W.Nr. you have? Despite all of our photos, we still haven't be able to see it clearly, although it's on the rear fuselage. The name of the pilot is unknown to us, but we'd sure like to know this information.

And WNr 3716 would make it into a D-3 which according to Mankau/Petrick's book had not been built yet in August 1940 when it crashed.

Cheers
Stig

Thanks all.

For reference, the source was Dr Alfred Price. His annotation to the reverse merely says: 18 August 1940.
