RAF Night Intruder Squadrons in MTO

Hello...

I’m trying to identify RAF squadrons which carried out night intruder missions in the Mediterranean Theater, particularly focusing on Italy during the 1943-1944 time frame.

I’ve attempted to do this using various combinations of search terms via the Internet, but, I’ve had little success in this effort.

With which kind of aircraft were these squadrons equipped – Blenheims? Havocs? Beaufighters?

Are there any books which comprehensively cover the activities of these squadrons?

Thanks very much.

Amongst others, take a look at Nos. 255, 256 and 600 Squadrons. All did some intruding, alongside defensive night fighting. There were more Squadrons involved before June 1944 but that's "before my time" as far as research goes.

There's some basic information on the RAF website. Their Operations Record Books and combat reports are at the National Archives in Kew, London and extracts can be ordered online.

Equipment by 1944-45 was Beaufighters and Mosquitoes. There were also USAAF Beaus, Mosquitoes and (by 1945) Black Widows intruding in the MTO.

The operational record book of 23 Sqn to the end of December 1943 is available at: http://www.oldrafrecords.com/index.php
This unit started to operate with Mosquitos from Malta in December 1942
