Hampden Crash Kiel 2 July 1940

I am looking for more information regarding the circumstances surrounding the shooting down of this aircraft - Hampden P1171 OL-P (83 Squadron RAF). I particularly hope for German information as the crash site was photographed. I have low-res copies of these images but no direct information. Many thanks in advance.

Jon,

Do you have details of the crew and their mission as these are in The Hampden File, by Harry Moyle from Air Britain Publications?

If you need this I'll post details

Hello,

We carry this in the EoE British Loss DB as follows:

"Night of July 1-2, 1940

Bomber Command

83 Squadron, Scampton
Hampden I P1171. Shot down by AA fire (1.Marine Flak Regt.) during night attack on the Scharnhorst and crashed in Kiel dockyard, Germany. P/O Douglas Redmayne (Pilot), Sgt Cyril Lee (Observer), Sgt Owen Sandford Gander (WOp/AG) and Sgt George Elliott Little (WOp/AG) all killed. Aircraft OL*P a write-off."
In addition, we carry three photos of this one in our EoE Photo DB. One shows the plane down on a spit of sand in the harbor area, and two others show the plane undergoing salvage. This may well be one of our color profile a/c for the EoE project, representing 83 SQ during the period.

Larry Hickey
