Researching Nightfighter victories
What is the easiest way to check whether a shoot down was claimed by a pilot?
I'm trying to find who may have shot down a Halifax bomber (from 426 Sqd RCAF) over Rouen around 3.00 am on 29th June 1944, on the return journey from a bombing raid on Metz. Can anyone help me with source references - or give me any tips on how I can research this further? (I speak German as well) Thanks |
Re: Researching Nightfighter victories
If you're sure of the hour (around 3a.m) and if you use German (or local French occupation time) the known list of NJG claims show only one man, Oblt Jakob Schaus, an ace of 4./NJG 4. He claimed two victories around this hour over Normandy, other victories on this theater were claimed between 0h30 and 1h08.
29.06.44 Oblt. Jakob Schaus 4./NJG 4 4-mot. Flzg. £ TB-5.6 at 2.300 m. [Grand Quevilly] 03.10 Film C. 2027/II Anerk: Nr.33 29.06.44 Oblt. Jakob Schaus 4./NJG 4 4-mot. Flzg. £ TB-4 at 2.300 m. [Pont Audemer] 03.20 Film C. 2027/II Anerk: Nr.34 Other losses this night and possible friendly fire by Allied nightfighter may be studied too. If you don't know if a nightfighter or AA fire shot down the bomber, probably the only source that may help you to know are the list of wrecks done by the German (don't remember the precise name of the document type), at least some of them being available for June 1944, or the local police reports (French "Gendarmerie"). |
