Fw 190 F-8 W.Nr. 584911
 

Hi folks,

I just chanced on this picture uploaded by Trond Backmann over on German airplanes from the second world war, facebook.com. Who could shed some light on that episode?

W.Nr. 584911 "Gelbe 1" is said to have crash landed at Vestfold, Norway, date unknown, but obviously late in the war judging by the Balkenkreuz. No information is to be found at flyvrak's excellent site...

The odd thing is that no W.Nr. in the 584 9xx range are known... Another case of misprinted W.Nr. as for Bf 109 G-14 W.Nr. 462 818 which actually had W.Nr. 262 818 painted on its tail?

Still strange that no information arises from this crash landing: such clear shot with such little background information..

Yes, there´s a gap of more than 300 numbers according to my lists (WNr 584592). I would not be sure about misprinting because all neighbouring blocks are Arado-produced. I do not how how the pruduction blocks were distributed among those larger blocks because of deception purposes. Maybe this plane must be counted to the 5840xx block...

A very interesting Fw190 photo indeed. In my Fw190 database file WNr. 584911 is sandwiched between two entries:

Fw190F-8, 584594, NN, FlÜG 1 Nord, Between Waren and Teterow, Germany
Fw190F-8, 584911, 1+ Y? SG? Location UNK
Fw190F-8, 584935, 7+ - Y, II./SG? Area Rødenes farm, Østre Krok, Norway

Many thanks, Roland, Rémi and Steve! At last some tidbits indeed. Good to know this is indeed a SG, I didn't even notice the "Gelbe Y" behind the Balkenkreuz.

So now, we know the type - Fw 190 F-8 W.Nr. 584 911, a unit "Gelbe 1+Y", 3./SG ?, the place, Vestfold, Norway, and a timeframe, obviously within the last month of war, April - May 1945. One of the Courland escapees?

The "Y" in my database file refers to the color of the plane number and not a "Y" on the fuselage. Sorry for not defining my database shorthand.

Thanks Steve. I was mislead by a seemingly oblique streak of yellow paint, which upper part can be seen behind the Balkenkreuz.

Thanks to Bengt Stangvik and Tormod Christiansen over on "German airplanes from the second world war" Facebook page, some new knowledge has arisen.

Fw 190 F-8 W.Nr. 584 911 was one of the four Fw 190 A-9 and F-8 which actually crash landed quite close together at Østre Krok, Rødenes, on 5 May 1945. A four plane formation is known to have started from Leck that day, then landed for refueling at Veilje/Grove before heading towards Kristiansand. Owing to the bad weather, two of the planes had no choice but to crash land around 8 AM on open farm land at Østre Krok, Rødenes:

Fw 190 F-8 W.Nr. 584 935 "Gelbe 7", Oblt. Edgar Mertensohn, 6./JG ?, unit not recorded. (attachment krok-01 and 03)
Fw 190 A-9 W.Nr. 739 525 "Rote 3", Lt. Jan Sepa, 2./JG ?, unit not recorded (attachment krok-01 and 04).

A third Fw 190, piloted by Lt. Kurt Sorge, who started that morning from Sylt, crash landed further north, near Søndre Soprim farm. Finally, a fourth Fw 190 crash landed in the same area, with no further details known. Thus, Fw 190 W.Nr. 584 911 "Gelbe 1" is with high probability one of the two latter machines. Interestingly, it's camouflage and tactical markings are a close match for Fw 190 F-8 W.Nr. 584 935 "Gelbe 7".

As a complement, this site states that all four machines were IV/JG 3 planes: http://www.ju88.net. This is not supported by the tactical markings observed...

Thanks for the additional information. Regarding Fw190 WNr. 739XXX, I respectfully suggest that this is not an Fw190A-9, but rather an AGO-built Fw190A-8.
