Re: New SAAF WW2 heritage web site
I agree, a terrific site.
By the way, under "Cecil Golding Photographs - 1", photo No. 34 is captioned "Italian Bf 109." From the wall in the background, I'm pretty sure this is in the scrapyard at Villafranca di Verona aerodrome and that it is Bf 109 G-6 W.Nr. 160319, yellow 14. Serg. Magg. Bianchini (5ª Sq.) crash landed this machine in a field near Bovolone on 12 February 1945. It had been damaged by defensive fire from B-25s of the US 310th BG which were attacking a synthetic fuel plant at Legnano. The Fw 190 in photos 106, 107 and 109 is Fw 190 F-9 W.Nr. 440340 which landed at Villafranca at 22.00 hours on 25 April 1945, very shortly after the Americans arrived. The pilot realised his mistake and ran for it. It seems he escaped so how he came to be there is unknown. Because the machine had no unit markings, it's possible it was being ferried in from a depot to 1./NSG 9 had evacuated Villafranca early that morning. I never knew previously that this aircraft had received roundels and fin flashes. In every other photo I've seen, it's lacking its cockpit canopy. |
Re: New SAAF WW2 heritage web site
I would appreciate some advice as to how to successfully access this site? I have probably made 7 or 8 attempts in the last 2 weeks and none of them have been successful all attempts usually result in IE crashing. I have searched for the site on Google and when I click on links found there I get the same failed outcome...
I am still operating XP but I have high end broadband speeds. Steve |
Re: New SAAF WW2 heritage web site
I'm using a Mac, so I've no recent experience of IE. It may be that you need a newer version (if XP supports it) or you could download another browser — Firefox seems to cope with just about anything in my experience, and it's free.
