Unidentified Fw-190 D

I was kindly advised to ask for further information on that picture of an Fw-190 D

http://www.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...d.php?t=128541

on this board, so I hope something will come to light as far as unit, code, werk-nr., location and so on is concerned.

My best guess is JG 2, somewhere in the Bamberg area, in April or May 1945. Probably the hangar-like structure in the background might give a clue?

Thanks for assistance

Kind Regards
Matthias Radu

Re: Unidentified Fw-190 D

There are some noticeable points on this photo

This is an early FW190D-9 belonging to JG2 built by Focke Wulf (look at the camouflage scheme on the engine cowling and the black exhaust area) .

This machine has probalbly belonged to III./JG54 before being posted to JG2 (no group bar can be distinguished on the photo) , look at the spiral painted on half surface of the spinner as on all early machines used by III./JG54 (ref our book Fw Camouflages and markings Part I JaPo pages 94 to 111 or Green Hearts book of Axel Urbanke published by Eagle Editions ).

The W.Nr is probably 2100xx (99% accurate), this is what I can say to you . Effectivelly there is another picture of this machine , taken from opposite side , but also it is impossible to determine the tactical number .

The individual or tactical number cannot be dertermined with 100% accuracy as applied over an overpainted area (perhaps yellow like the tail band) . The Gun cowl is probably a 5 pieces'one (difficult to confim in any way) . The blown canopy was probably fitted later during service perhaps during a maintenance work .

So a simple but in-detail study of this picture can bring you several noticeable points .

Hope that helps

Few elements to add

the radiator cowling might have been replaced, dissuptive camouflage scheme on both sides . A III group bar could have been painted according to me .

Eric,

thank you for these most valuable hints. I had faint hopes that one could see more details on that other picture Mark Proulx mentioned, regarding the callsign and the location.

Thanks a lot

Matthias

Re: Unidentified Fw-190 D

Few more interesting points extract from the other picture .

A III Gruppe bar is painted on the cental band of the tricolour tail band . This one has the same grey value than the 2 outer bands so it may have been yellow . The individual number is not clearly visible perhaps yellow 4 or yellow 1 over a repainted area . The size of the tactical code is identical to the one observed on W.Nr 600434 , black 14 discovered after war.

As often seen by III./JG2 the Gruppe bar is painted with the colour of the tactical code , so a machine belonging to 11./JG2.

The hankenkreuz is highlighted in white , another evidence to determine an very early machine (from 210001 to 210037) . The background of the BalkenKreuz is painted in RLM76 as on W.Nrn 210037 , 210015, 210051....

Last evidence , the 5 pieces gun cowling clearly visible on left side photo as well as the black exhaust area .

The propeller blades are broken , perhaps du to a belly-landing . And on left side picture , the spiral covers only half of the surface of the spinner , typical to III./JG54 Fw 190d-9s , this machine could have been posted to before being used by III./JG2.

All the best

Eric,

thanks for all interesting notes about this Fw 190D.
Where is possible to find the other pic of the plane? (web, books or other)

Thanks

Francesco Maria Lentini
