15 January 1944 Shoot down at Bolsena
On 15 January 1944, B-17F 41-24364 from the 2nd BG went down in Lake Bolsena just off the town of Bolsena. No crew were still aboard, but the plane was shot down by two German fighters, probably based near Viterbo. (MACR 1814). The ball turret of the plane was recently recovered and is now on display in a museum in Bolsena. The story, for those interested:

Re: 15 January 1944 Shoot down at Bolsena
Nick, thanks.
It looks like the only daytime claim is by: Uffz Alfred Nieder, 5./JG 51 for a B-17 SW of Orvieto 2000 m at 13:30. That might be it. |
