Fw Wolfgang Roos + 25 Jul 44

The above (born 6 Apr 20) died as a result of an accident at Crailsheim whilst he was with FFDS A43. He was a gunner, EK1 & 2, Ehrenpokal and golden frontflugspange and had been wounded. Matti was unable to help but has anyone any idea with what unit he was with operationally? Oh, & I know he had a twin who was killed with KG 2 a year before

I have a Flg. Karl Rüß injured in Mar-44, but that seems an unlikely match. Other than that, I got nothing.

Chris,
The following is an extract from Wolfgand Roos' Flugbuch , made c.ten years' ago when I was loaned the FB . I believe that I scanned the whole book - but my 'infallible' filing system is currently misbehaving! I'll let you know if it emerges into daylight.

Wolfgang Roos made a total of 177 flights, of which 126 were war flights - all of them, it seems, in Russia. He made his first war (I believe) flight on 14 Feb. 1943, in a Fw.189 coded GJ+RS (don't know this unit !). He made eight war flights in total (2 x GJ+RS; 5 x KH+GU: 1 x KH+GZ - don't know which units!) before being assigned to 1./Aufklärungsgruppe 31. He flew his first war flight with that unit on 8 April 1943 (in 5D+AH) The rest of his service was spent with this unit - and always in an Fw.189. His last flight (No.177) recorded in his Flugbuch was in 5D+JH on 9 March 1944. It was not a war flight.

To complicate matters slightly. An email correspondent that I was in touch with at the time (and whose details are with the FB!) claimed that Roos was attached to FFS A43, a flying school located at Crailsheim. When he crashed, Roos was flying an Italian Saiman 202 / wnr 51534 code unknown.

Bill/Remi

Most interesting as I have his and his brothers joint death card. My interest is how he was injured; what WASt told me:

15 Sep 39 Seefliegerhorst-Kommandantur List
15 Apr 43 Fliegerführer 1
1 May 43: 1/31
26 Feb 44: Wounded near Newel with 1/31

He was on FFS A43 and the Saiman was BS+CV

Dear members I have 2 conflicting data

1e GJ+RS is a He177 according source "Heinkel He177, 277, 277 from Joachim Dressel / Manfried Griehl
2e BS+CV is a Si204 according source "Fliegerhorst Crailsheim from Richard A. Badal

Peter

Peter,

the Fw 189 in post #5 should read GI+RS.

BS+CV was a valid registration for a Saiman 202, I've found it in a Flugbuch from the same school in July 1944. There was no registration similar to BS+CV for a Si 204.
