Who are these luftwaffe pilots
Hi, I'm looking for a positive ID on these Luftwaffe pilots. You may have seen this previously, but I'm reposting to see if anyone can come up with new leads.
I have story behind the ID of this Spitfire and it's loss story, and I can share it with you a bit later, but first want to see if anyone can ID on faces without facts that might not be correct. That is the issue with internet research; after a while things start echoing and creating their own truths.. Bert |
Re: Who are these luftwaffe pilots
Upper photo: almost certainly Hptm Oesau but this Leutnant - ???
Lower photo: Hptm Oesau and probably ObLt Mölders (his Eiserne Kravatte looks like RK+EL) The Spit is the well-known P7665 YT-L flown by P/O Gill, 65 Sqn, s/d on Feb. 5th 1941 :) kww1906 |

What sources make you say that it's 'well-known'? Date is correct, Oesau identified on the pics by others as well. Victories on feb 5 in region of St Omer do not list him for victory but a few others: Luftwaffe claims on february 5th, 1941 in France in the area of St. Omer include: Lt. Helmut Meckel 2./JG 3 Spitfire Code unknown Time 10 1 km. N.W. St. Omer Lt. Helmut Meckel 2./JG 3 Spitfire Code unknown Time 11 5 km. N.W. St. Omer Ofe. Robert Olejnik 2./JG 3 Spitfire Code unknown Time 5 10 km. N.W. St. Omer Fw. Ernst Heesen 2./JG 3 Spitfire Code unknown Time1 10 km. N.W. St.Omer Fw. Hans Ehlers 2./JG 3 Spitfire Code unknown Time 5 10 km. N.W. St. Omer If any one has a pic from Meckel we could compare. Pilot of the Spitfire was Geoffrey Hill, not Gill. I'm still looking for a pic of him; he was made POW |
