HURRICANE MARK I Z4249 13/4/42
Good evening/morning depending where you are
have you ever heard of a Hurricane Mk I "Z4249" which was shot down and belly landed in Libya beginning of 1942, possibly around 13 April 1942 ? it was found and photographed by the German Army. A friend of mine is working on that aircraft and looks for information such as pilot name, squadron etc.. thanks to all GC |

Re: HURRICANE MARK I Z4249 13/4/42
Hello Gilles,
C.Scott flew Z4249 on 10 September 1941, claiming a Ju 88 damaged with 94 Sqn according to the book "The other eagles". But the Air-Britain book does not show that this aircraft served with 94 Sqn RAF. |
Re: HURRICANE MARK I Z4249 13/4/42
The Air Britain books are a wonderful guide, where would we be without them? However, in the first volume of his return to the Desert air war, Chris Shores does mention other cases where the AM records are incomplete for this theatre. As a more extreme example later, they seem to have missed entirely the re-equipment of 81 Sq with Spitfire Mk.VIIIs

In November 1941 450 RAAF was on ARD (Aircraft Repair Depot) duty at Burg el Arab.
Hurricanes Z4229 and Z4249 arrived from 1 A.R.S.U. on 11 NOV 41. In December 450 RAAF was relieved of duty by 40 SAAF. |
Re: HURRICANE MARK I Z4249 13/4/42
I can confirm from two different logbooks that Z4249 did serve with 94 Squadron.

Re: HURRICANE MARK I Z4249 13/4/42
Yes indeed Z4249 was with 94 sqdn where it was coded "L".
Its pilot for Sept 10, 1941 was actually Scott Vos. Regards, Ian |
