is it true, that Joseph McCarthy the controversial Republican Senator from Wisconsin, well know for his notorious Commuist witch hunt (1950ies) served as an Radiogunner in an SBD-3 "Dauntless"? And if so, what Branch? Navy or Marine-Corps?

I am old enough to have watched, live, Edward R. Murrow's famous expose of McCarthy when I was a teenager.

Unclear - you watched the McCarthy hearings in the early 'fifties as I did, or you watched Murrow's expose some years later or both? I was in high school at the time of the hearings and remember watching them of TV in the afternoons after school.

Although this is OT, it may surprise most of our European friends that the majority of Americans were so afraid of a communist infiltration and takeover of the country that they supported what Joe McCarthy was doing at the time. It was only years later that people began to grudgingly admit that his methods were somewhat over the top. But, like cancer surgery, it had to be done for the sake of the country.

I think you'll find that very little about the USA surprises us anymore. The madder aspects of American life are extensively reported over here, sometimes at the expense of the saner ones.

Yes, Nick, and the "madder" ones are often distorted and embelished to the extent that a native American does not recognize them anymore. But, hey, if the international media didn't have the U.S. to beat up on they would go out of business.

No, Larry, I did not watch the hearings as, if I am correct, they were during the day and I was in school. But, I did watch Murrow live, later, as you point out.
