Hello

Uffz. Walter Schienbein is not mentioned in any official Luftwaffe claim list nor unpublished chronic for this night and therefore hardly responsible for the sad loss of this Wellington.

I am aware that this claim appears in the so called Nonnenmacher list but as it's original source(s) can't be checked, a fair share of care should be taken.

All the best, Marcel

the WBN Lageberichte do say that the crash was caused by a nightfighter, but this fact is not supported by other, pretty reliable German forces, so it is either Flak, technical failure (due to Flak) or even 'Blendwirkung' of search lights (must check that)

Re: Uffz Walter Schienbein 2/NJG1

Hello

There is no documentary support in the lists of the Luftwaffe Personal Amt suggesting that Schienbein claimed this Wellington. Nevertheless, Ring and Nonnenmacher somehow must have find something which provoked them to include this claim in their notorious lists, whether that have been info from Schienbein himself or his Flugbuch.

If they wanted to put some bogey claims into their lists in order 'to protect' their data from copying (as they did), Schienbein is the most unlogical name to expect. Another primary German source - a list of nightfighter claims in which the support of Flakscheinwerfer Regiment 1 played a decisive role - this Wellington was brought down by blinding with search lights. This explanation must have been noted after an investigation of the wreckage (apparantly no German gunfire bullets from a nightfighter found).

All the best, Marcel

Hi Adrian & Marcel,

The answer to this matter is simply that the claim by Schienbein was rejected and the victory credited to Flak & Flak searchlights, I've found this in the official OKL/RLM Abschussmeldungen (for the NJWD 2nd ed. I've studied and analysed all of these Abschussmeldungen on microfilm covering 1940-44 over the past three years, the results will be published in the new series of books in 2016 -thanks again Marcel for lending the microfilmreader! ):

The Wellington was illuminated by 'Gruppe 2' and also claimed by Flak of 1. & 2./Res. Flak Abt. 447 (Grossbattr.), 1. & 2./Res. Flak Abt. 646 and 1./Res. Flak Abt. 305 (Wellington nr. Helmond 03.22 hrs).

Cheers, Theo

Hi Martin,

Publisher Wing Leader/Red Kite in UK, 5 volumes, each of some 400 pages, in-depth analyses of the Nachtjagd & Flak defense for each and every night in WWII over the whole Third Reich, complete listings of all NJ/Flak/Flak searchlight claims & matched Allied a/c losses, detailed German NJ losses, fully illustrated with predominantly new photos (est. 1,000 photos), lots of tables, maps etc, publication around mid 2016.

Cheers, Theo
