French testing of German aircraft
 

Can anyone recommend a book, bibliography or report about the late-war/post-war French testing of Me262, He162, He274 or Do335 aircraft? Or the use of Fw190 (NC-900) or Ju88/188 by the AdlA? Optimistically - in English?

I don't have it, so can say anything about it.

As for former German aircraft used by the French, I will also include Fi 156 and Ju 52.

Concerning the Fw 190, the well-known regiment "Normandie-Niemen" was psot-war equiped with it for some time.

Captured Ju 88 were used for recon and bombing missions against the German pockets on the Atlantic coast, with some losses.

Captured Fi 156 were used in the Alps in spring 1945 to fly recon, supply drops and also attack enemy positions with grenades and so on.

According to Eric Brown, he flew an Ar240 that was under French control, but it doesn't appear in any list of types officially flown by the French that I've seen.

Laurent: I'm aware of the Airdocs Collections book. Had a chance to thumb through it 10 years ago, but my command of the French language - although restaurant-sufficient then, was/is not sufficient to have warranted the cost of the book.

Graham: good call. I'd forgotten about Eric Brown. I'll look up some of his articles in Air International.

Juha: thanks, I have that article in storage, along with the series on the Dornier 335. Now if I could only remember which box in the garage those magazines are sitting in!

The books on Watson's Whizzers are great reads as well. As entertaining are the anecdotes on the inter-Allied skulduggery on how to sneak in first and grab a prize before your rivals (i.e. between the US, UK and French science/engineering teams), which meant occasionally you got there just as the German forces were pulling out (occasionally before).

Naahhh, no worries! The silverfish have been eaten by the poisonous spiders, who have been eaten by the rats who are the size of cats, who have been eaten by the poisonous snakes, who have been eaten by the Kookaburras, who got into the garage through the same holes as the rats and snakes. I hope!!!!

Roger Receveau's account of testing the He 274 and Do 335 is reproduced (in French) on Jean Houben's wonderful site "histoires d'aviateurs.." - if a Frenchman has flown it, there's a report here...

The French even tested (on the ground) the explosive bolt system designed to jettison the Do 335's rear prop for pilot bail out - needless to say, "it proved totally ineffective.."
